Prof Dr. Erich Feigl (Austria) In spite of the fact that on the 28th of September 2001 Pope John Paul II visited Edjmiadsin in order to participate at the celebrations of the so-called 301st anniversary of the foundation of the Armenian Gregorian Church, the history of this church has to be examined closely. The celebrators present this anniversary as the 'foundation of the first Christian Church on earth'. Everybody who deals with the history of Armenia and with the nistojcy of Christianity, knows that this is not true, Even pro Armenian historians are not sure about the year of foundation and tend between 286 and 314. One should not forget that it is not easy to change a population's religion within a short time. Even Emperor Konstantin and Lenin and Stalin failed with this. The Armenian history is build up of mythologic elements. According to the nationalist mythology they belong to prophet Noah and are called hayks and lords. That is the reason why they use the Ararat mountain as symbol, whereas this mountain is actually within the borders of Turkey, So in September the Armenians celebrated the 301st anniversary of the 'first Christian state on earth' to underline this mythology and the witness of this event was Pope John Paul II. Why is that, Gregorian Armenians and Catholics show up together? The Armenians want to cover up the situation in Nogorno - Karabakh, where about one million people had to flee from their home and are refugees now. The question of national church came up very late, why in the years of 301 one cannot talk of a national church. Although there were quarrels within the church, it still was a unity. The national church idea is quite the opposite of the church's principle of being universal. Still, in the past, after discussions on some basic dogmas of Christianity, the splitting up started. The Armenians took over the monophizit belief. It is significant to examine the reasons for this decision and focus on the circumstances of that period. Because the Armenians did not choose the way of division consciously but out of some historical circumstances it happened that they became monophizit and split up from the main church. Apart from this it is interesting to view the situation in the Ottoman Empire, where the Gregorian Armenians opposed the Catholic Armenians. Under the Ottoman Empire the Catholic Armenians were completely loyal, whereas the Gregorian Armenians rebelled against the Ottomans. In spite of this circumstance it is even more surprising that today Pope John Paul II was special guest on the anniversary celebration in Edjmiadsin. Although the negative relation of the past between the two confessions seems to be forgotten, there is still not the possibility of a unification of the confessions. Besides getting closer to the Catholic Church, the Armenian Church also gets closer to the Alban Church of Caucasus - the Armenians act as the mentors and protectors of the Alban Church, which they are not. The Armenians took the Alban Church under the protection in order to underline their claim of being the first Christian state on earth and in order to have more influence on the region. But the history of a nation contains the facts of the whole centuries, not months or years. The history of our nation, which had been running with the laws of Soviet Empire for 70 years, was purposefully falsified. The historical facts had been distorted, that led not to the Azerbaijan State History, but caused the creation of the history of Soviet Azerbaijan, i.e. the history, which is wide of the mark. At present time, our government, conducting an independent policy, seems to go through the historical past of the Soviet Empire again - the history which is tried to be forgotten. The government of Azerbaijan, attempting to protect the territorial integrity, independence and citizens' rights at the beginning of the XX century; now, in the XXI century, has again faced the aggressive hypocritical policy of neighboring Armenia. As a result of 10 year-old conflict, Azerbaijan has lost 20% of its territory, over 1 million of Azeri citizens have left their native lands and live in box-wagons and tent camps as refugees now. Thinking over the question "Do we experience our history again?" I remembered the episode from my school years. There lived a lot of Armenians in our house. One of them, children used to call her "Aunt Laura", was working in our school. I remember that once I saw workers loading Aunt Laura's furniture onto the truck. In a surprise I asked "Aunt Laura, why are you leaving?" Laughing she told, "Don't you know why? You are banishing us". Her words were engraved into my memory as a very unfair reply. The answer, not understandable for me at that time, now seems quite proportionate to today's events - it was the policy of "being a humble, offended nation". Divulging the world about the violation of their rights and making the image of the nation, exposed to genocide, Armenians conduct the policy, which is completely based upon the outrageous lie - they entirely hide the historical truth. In order to show the similarity between the dirty politics of Armenia in the last and present centuries, let's have a look to some historical facts: "It has already been 4 months, that groups of Armenian militaries and other Armenians, in the name of Bolsheviks, have been committing senseless savagery towards peaceful population, living in different regions of Azerbaijan. Besides, the public opinion of Europe forms in a quite opposite way - a result of false information, spread by organizers of gang groups (the extraction from the lecture of M. Hajinski - the ministry of Foreign Affairs of ADR; the document was taken from the archival records of 1918). Another archival document says: "The evidence of the interrogated witnesses determines that until December of 1918, Muslims - both landowners and peasants of submountain zone were not going to defend themselves anyhow, though they had heard about the destruction of tatar's villages in other districts of Karabakh and about the outrage and brutality of Armenians towards Muslim population. Nevertheless, they were permanently reassured by Armenians of neighboring districts and their respectful representatives, so they did not even suppose that Armenians were preparing to ruin their villages at that time. In early December of 1918 Armenians made an armed attack against the Muslims of the district, they began to murder some of them, partly driving the cattle away, and finally, the whole organized gangs attacked the tatar's villages. However, the witnesses' evidence and the report #84 of the chief of Jabrayil district, dated on 17 February of 1919 to the Karabakh general-governor state "the Muslim population of the district, accepting such events with the feeling of deep sorrow and not resorting to any active operations, took up only defensive position for protecting themselves and their property from the Armenians' attack. They had not committed any irregular actions against Armenians, the proof of which was that none of the Armenian settlements had suffered from the attack". These archival records are only two of hundreds documents, proving the crimes, which had been committed by Armenians towards Azerbaijan population in 1918. The barbarian double-faced policy of Armenians at the beginning of the century is going on with the same inclination in the period of world globalization, when the borders of European countries are being raised off. In March of 1918 Shaumyan gathered the armed forces and under the direction of Baku Soviet started the genocide towards Azerbaijan Turks. During 3 days over 12 thousand people of peaceful population in Baku - men, women, and children - were violently killed. Later, the similar deeds were implemented in Shamakha, Guba, Salyan, Goychay, Lenkaran, Karabakh and many other regions by Armenian armed forces of gang groups with the initiative of Shaumyan and participation of Andronic, now called the hero of Armenian nation. There are a lot of archival records and scientific materials about this matter. Today the Parliament of France confirms the Armenian genocide and French journalists give information about it in their newspapers. But why does the "humble" Armenian nation shut eyes to the Khojaly genocide by distorting historical facts? What does the World Community as well as an ordinary French journalist know about the Khojaly terror - one of the most serious crimes, committed against the humanism of the XX century. Are average Europeans and Americans, busy by common concerns, objectively informed about the reasons and essence of Armenian-Azerbaijan conflict? How often do the ordinary Frenchmen, Americans, Turks and British people face real true facts in the information they have? Thinking about all this, we understand once again the importance of having correct data and information exchange. Let us not forget about the yesterday of our today and tomorrow, i.e. about our history. Feeling the historical responsibility of the present time, we must correctly pass the Azerbaijan truth to the World Community - it is the sacred duty of you and me - all of us. Being a child of the land, the territorial integrity of which was broken; ancient historical and cultural memorials of which were destroyed and stolen; thousands of citizens of which were taken prisoners, killed and driven away from their lands; I do not doubt to have a merited history recorded for our tomorrow. The truth always wins the victory at the end.
